Welcome to Broken Group Islands!
Located on
Vancouver Island's
windswept west coast, Broken Group Islands is a collection of over 100 rugged
islands that fleck Barkley Sound. In total, this picturesque region encompasses
10,607 ha (26,210 acres), of which only 1,350 ha (3,336 acres) are made up of
land. As one of the three main recreational components in the
Pacific
Rim National Park, Broken Group Islands has become a popular destination
for wild camping, sightseeing and boating. From the sandy beaches and quiet
lagoons of the inner islands, to the sea caves of the outer shores, there is
plenty of wildlife to see in this isolated biosphere, and the word is spreading.
Paddlers come from far and wide to explore these calm waters and because its
sheltered location protects it from the extreme ocean conditions that batter
more exposed sections of the west coast, even inexperienced sea kayakers can
navigate these channels. The area is best accessed by boat and seen with
tour
guides that can be hired in
Bamfield,
Toquart Bay,
Ucluelet or
Port
Alberni.
