Gold River at a Glance
Basking between Vancouver
Island's Gold and Heber Rivers, 90 km (56 mi) west of Campbell
River, the town of Gold River shines with natural treasures. Rising up out
of the wilderness relatively recently in 1965, the village was developed to
service a logging community and was Canada's
first all-electric town. While the area's logging industry continues today,
Gold River is increasingly focused on tourism, and no wonder, for it is a truly
natural recreational paradise. The river, after which the village was named,
and the beautiful Nootka Sound, into which it flows, are both world-renowned
fishing spots and Gold River offers various fishing guides and tours, including
the historic M.V.
Uchuck III, a converted US minesweeper that tours in and around Nootka Sound.
Boundless opportunities also exist for wildlife viewing as whales, black bears,
eagles and elk thrive in this pristine Canadian wilderness and the area's warm
summers inspire camping, kayaking and hiking in the bordering Strathcona
Provincial Park and Gold
Muchalat Provincial Park. The Upana
Caves, just 17 km (10.5 mi) from Gold River are the deepest north of Mexico
and provide excellent caving, or spelunking opportunities while every June,
energetic walkers pour into the town for The
Great Walk - 63.5 km (40 mi) of stunningly rugged terrain from Gold River
to Tahsis.
