The town of Lake Cowichan sits at the eastern tip of Cowichan
Lake, within the wider Cowichan Lake District. Cowichan's name, Quw'utsun
in the First Nations Coast Salish language, means land warmed by the sun, and
this leisurely little town lives up to it. Just 20 minutes northwest of Duncan,
Lake Cowichan and other nearby communities of the district, Mesachie Lake, Honeymoon
Bay and Youbou, draw visitors to the surrounding vineyards, rolling fields,
cedar forests and sun-kissed beaches. Lake Cowichan is known as the gateway
to some of the best fishing, camping and hiking on the island. The lake is one
of Vancouver Island's
largest fresh-water lakes and turns the town into a hive of summer water sports
activity, along with Cowichan River which flows attractively through the heart
of town from the lake. The local marina
meets the needs of many boaters, kayakers, waterskiiers and jetskiiers. Just
a few minutes from the marina, Lakeview
Park is a popular family camping and swimming spot, while just out of town,
Gordon
Bay Provincial Park is also known for its camping and swimming, in addition
to spectacular fishing, hiking and stunning views. Lake Cowichan's natural beauty
and charming personality is reflected in the fine crafts, artwork and textiles
found in the town's local galleries, studios and boutiques.
