Helmcken House
The oldest house in British Columbia, Helmcken House offers the chance to see what life was like in the mid-19th century. Standing on its original site, the house was built in 1852 by Dr. John Sebastian Helmcken who eventually became a statesman and helped to negotiate the entry of British Columbia as a province of Canada.

Gwa'ni (Nimpkish) Hatchery
This salmon fish hatchery is located just south of Port McNeill along the Nimpkish River. The best time to view salmon spawning is from mid-November to mid-December. From October to July, visitors can view thousands of fish fry.

Campbell River Telegraph Line
Completed in 1912, the Campbell River telegraph/telephone line was completed as a project funded by the Canadian government to improve communication on the northern end of Vancouver Island. The line was strung from tree to tree to reach its final destination at Telegraph Cove, which is a popular whale-watching and outdoor adventure destination today. |

Wastell Manor, Cabin 24
Fred Wastell made his living at Telegraph Cove for more than five decades, building this home in 1929, which juts attractively from the bluffs. He added on to the structure throughout the years as his family grew. Wastell's father, "Duke", had recieved the land from its bankrupt owner, and along with Japanese and Chinese workers built a salmon saltery and small sawmill, creating the first viable industry in the area. The family used boats as transportation, as it was not until 1956 that Fred was able to build a usable road to the outside world.

Haig-Brown Heritage House
The Haig-Brown House is the former home of Roderick and Ann Haig-Brown between 1936 and 1975. Roderick was a conservationist and author, writing over 25 books on natural history and conservation. He and Ann were key players in the defending the Fraser River from hydroelectric dams. The Haig-Brown property totals almost 20 acres with forests and farmland. The home and surrounding area was dedicated as an historic site in 1990. Today the home offers tours and serves as a museum, bed and breakfast, seminar venue and more. Guests are also invited to walk the property's trails and listen to the Campbell River as it flows by.

Nuu-chah-nulth Archaeological Sites
Long before the first European settlers came to the Pacific Rim of North American, there were the Nuu-chah-nulth people, a rich and diverse tribal band who left their imprint throughout what is now the Pacific Rim National Park. Today, over 290 significant native archaeological sites are scattered throughout the Pacific Rim region.

Fort Rodd Hill
Built in the late 1890s, this coast artillery fort defended Victoria, BC and the Esquimalt Naval Base. It was part of the larger defence strategy of the British Empire and Canada, from 1878 to 1956. Today, Fort Rodd Hill offers visitors the opportunity to explore gun batteries, underground magazines, command posts, guardhouses, barracks and searchlight emplacements. Interpretive signs and audio-visual stations are set-up in the sites.
Travellers will enjoy the amazing sea and mountain views, which makes this an ideal place for family outings and picnics. Twelve picnic tables are located near the parking lot or visitors may also enjoy picnicking inside the sites, under the trees or on any of their three beaches. Special events are held here throughout the year, including the historic Military Encampment, Canada Day Celebrations and an old English Car Show. The sites on Fort Rodd Hill are open daily, all year round except for Christmas Day.

Telegraph Cabin
Bobby Cullerne was the very first resident of Telegraph Cove, arriving to the protected harbour in 1912 to man newly-strung telegraph lines stretching from Campbell River. The lineman lived alone in a one-room, one-story cabin that is still preserved today, ensuring communication to the most northern and remotest parts of Vancouver Island. |

Johnstone Strait Whale Interpretive Centre

Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park
This small, undeveloped day-use park contains the only remaining coal tipple on the Island. This concrete tipple was built in the early 1900s by the Pacific Coal Company, and was the first of its kind in the region. The tipple is all that remains of the Morden Coal Mine, which once thrived here. The Regional District of Nanaimo maintains a trail that runs through the park to the Nanaimo River.

The Bastion
The Bastion is the oldest original freestanding Hudson’s Bay Company fort in North America. Built in 1853, it is the oldest building in Nanaimo and possibly the second oldest in British Columbia. The Bastion is open every day from 10 am to 4 pm during June, July and August with limited hours in May and September.

St. Ann's Academy
Once Victoria's tallest masonry building, this former French-Canadian convent and school (1871-1973), set in six park-like acres, now housing modern offices, contains a magnficiently restored 1858 chapel and some restored interiors. Open 10 am to 4 pm daily in summer, call for winter hours.

Old Municipal Hall
Having served as a fire hall in the past, this 1946 municipal hall building features a tower in which the fire hoses were formerly hung to dry. A collection of 62 paintings is also featured, depicting Alert Bay heritage and culture.
